Alia Bhatt pairs her olive green Manish Malhotra sari with a scalloped blouse

After her well-tailored pantsuit from Gucci Ancora, Alia Bhatt’s style direction turned towards the classic six-yard staple. Designed by Manish Malhotra, Bhatt’s ensemble ends the age-old question of velvet finally staging a comeback. Last festive season, we saw Preity Zinta in a black scallop-hemmed velvet number from Shaveta & Anuj and the Gen-Z crowd opted for sleek, cut-out bodycon dresses like Ananya Panday’s vibrant blue Alex Perry look. From Angelina Jolie’s iconic ‘leg-dress’ moment at the 2012 Oscars in a black velvet Atelier Versace gown, fashion in the past few years has shown us a resurgence of vintage styles, including the use of velvet.
In a deep olive green staple, Alia Bhatt wrapped her velvet pallu around her back. Her blouse had detailed scalloped edges and a daring plunging neckline, adding to the talk around risqué necklines in fashion, as seen on stars like Emily Ratajkowski at Paris Fashion Week. The blouse, with capped sleeves, was embroidered with antique gold and finishing her look, she accessorised with Russian Emeralds earrings from Malhotra’s collection.
Janhvi Kapoor adds definition to her pattu pavadai with a gemstone-encrusted kamarbandh
Among the plethora of couture during Radhika-Anant’s pre-wedding festivities, it was impossible to miss looks by Janhvi Kapoor. She first broke the internet with her gradient Manish Malhotra look followed by a metallic mini dress and a sari-gown. For the third day of festivities in Jamnagar, she opted for a sari skirt set from the couturier that was in line with the Heritage Indian theme of the evening.
Called a pattu pavadai or half sari, it’s conventionally worn for coming-of-age ceremonies and other special occasions. Janhvi Kapoor’s peachy-pink pavadai (skirt) illustrated a traditional cone-shaped, long silhouette that was pleated and tied around the waist. The crushed silk skirt showcased zari work in geometric patterns and was emblazoned with a gota patti border. The blouse, in a sharp rani pink shade, was heavily embellished with aari embroidery and sequin work, rendering itself a lotus bloom on the sleeves and the back. A matching fuchsia brocade dupatta with a checkered design was meticulously draped to round off the look.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s jamawar jacket by Ritu Kumar took over 200 hours to embroider

Drawing from the cashmere shawls of the 17th century, the print of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Ritu Kumar ensemble sits in the avant-garde category. Stepping away from her recent hot streak of embroidered and embellished saris by Tarun Tahiliani and Manish Malhotra the actor opted for this set for the “Heritage Indian” theme of Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani’s pre-wedding festivities in Jamnagar.
Ahead, we breakdown Kareena Kapoor Khan’s full look for you.
The mini dress and fitted bodice silhouette along with intricate sequin and aari work. According to the fashion house, “The Imran coat from the Ritu Kumar Couture ‘23 collection is a derivative of the age-old technique of Jamawar. The jacket took over 200 hours to embroider and has an intricate design in khaki colours of a hand-block print from Farooqabad. The print features a paisley motif which is very intricate—it draws from cashmere shawls that were popular in the 17th century. The zardozi embroidery on it was very fine to do justice to the print.
Katrina Kaif is kickstarting the year in dad checks
Plaid or checkered patterns have played a significant role in fashion history. Take the iconic matching plaid outfits worn by Cher and Dionne in “Clueless” or Alexander McQueen’s Autumn/Winter 2009 collection, “Horn of Plenty,” featuring bold houndstooth silhouettes. A memorable fashion moment unfolded in “Sex and the City” when Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), clad in a vintage Vivienne Westwood lilac plaid coat, caused George (Peter Hermann) to crash his bike. Fast forward to 2023, and plaid prints made a comeback, gracing the runways of Bottega Veneta and Ottolinger on dresses, skirts, and jackets.
Drawing inspiration from these references, it’s evident that plaid or checkered prints possess a timeless charm that can seamlessly blend into both summer and winter wardrobes. Whether it’s the breezy flowy skirts for summer or the cozy overcoats in the current winter months, these patterns remain versatile. Katrina Kaif seamlessly fits into this timeless trend with her ensemble, and it’s not far-fetched to anticipate the comeback of this print.
